Overview

Bobby is Of Counsel in Maynard Nexsen’s Estate, Trust & Business Planning and Family Business practice groups. Bobby’s practice consists of providing tax and legal advice to individuals and their estates, trusts, charitable entities, and domestic and foreign business entities.

He is skilled at providing sophisticated tax compliance, consulting, and planning services to wealth strategists, financial planners, and professional fiduciaries, providing tax advisory and legal services in support of their client relationships.

With respect to the provision of tax advice, a sizable part of Bobby’s practice pertains to the completion of complex federal and state income tax returns for individuals, fiduciaries, and the domestic and foreign partnerships and corporations in which they have invested.

Regarding the provision of legal advice, he has significant experience in estate planning, wealth transfer planning, charitable planning, and the administration of trusts and estates. His current practice includes the drafting of a wide variety of estate planning documents (from simple wills to a variety of complex trusts), the completion of estate and gift tax returns, and advising on the appropriate administration of estates and trusts.

He also has extensive experience providing legal advice to tax-exempt organizations, most often to private foundations and public charities that are tax-exempt under IRC § 501(c)(3). Such legal advice has mostly consisted of tax compliance, governance issues, and tax planning with respect to mergers and asset acquisitions.

In addition, as part of his wider estate planning and wealth transfer planning practice, he has a limited practice as a business transactions attorney, using his past experience as a corporate attorney to provide tax and legal advice to the domestic or foreign business entities that his individual or fiduciary clients hold or manage.

Prior to joining Maynard Nexsen, Bobby worked as a tax advisor or as counsel for various Fortune 100 companies, including a national bank, an international professional services firm, and a national financial retirement services organization.

Bobby holds a J.D., summa cum laude, from the Charleston School of Law, where he graduated as salutatorian. He earned his B.A., magna cum laude, in political science and classical studies from Furman University. He also holds an LL.M. in taxation from the Georgetown University Law Center.
