Michael A. Parente

Michael Parente is an Associate in the Firm’s Government Investigations & White Collar Defense practice, focusing on government investigations, criminal and civil enforcement actions and related litigation. He represents individuals and businesses in matters involving a wide variety of alleged unlawful conduct at both the federal and state levels.

In the criminal arena, Michael has experience working on a variety of fraud cases, including healthcare fraud, bank fraud, wire fraud, honest services fraud, and securities fraud, as well as money laundering and criminal forfeiture cases. On the civil side, Michael has represented clients facing False Claims Act investigations in the healthcare industry, in the government contracting context, and for customs and tariffs violations. He also has significant experience with complex, high-profile antitrust cases. He has helped clients successfully navigate the Department of Justice Antitrust Division’s leniency program and also litigated class action antitrust lawsuits and multi-district litigation, while simultaneously representing his clients in parallel criminal and regulatory investigations.

Michael has particular expertise with complex e-discovery issues. Michael regularly uses this expertise to assist clients in responding to federal grand jury subpoenas and civil investigative demands (“CIDs”), and also in responding to the execution of search warrants and seizures of property.

Michael also has trial experience in both criminal and civil matters. In 2022, Michael was part of the trial team defending a constitutional challenge to South Carolina’s congressional districts in front of a three-judge panel. While clerking for the firm in law school, Michael was also heavily involved in a federal white-collar criminal trial that resulted in an acquittal for a client charged with healthcare fraud. Because of his passion for criminal justice, Michael also volunteers with the Federal Public Defenders office to represent clients in need on a pro bono basis.

Michael received a B.A. in Philosophy and a Master of Public Health from the University of Virginia and earned his law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law. Before attending law school, Michael was a health care industry analyst with a corporate intelligence firm.
