Pro Bono Champion: Lisa Sumner - Legal Aid of North Carolina's Lawyer on the Line

October 11, 2018

Lisa P. Sumner has been volunteering for Legal Aid of North Carolina's Lawyer on the Line program for a few years now, helping one client each month. Lawyer on the Line is a partnership of the North Carolina Bar Foundation and Legal Aid of North Carolina. It gives private attorneys an easy way to provide basic legal advice and service to Legal Aid clients. Volunteers serve thousands of clients every year who have nowhere else to turn.

Legal Aid refers individuals from across North Carolina with concerns about, in Lisa’s particular practice area of bankruptcy, the amount of debt they have and whether they should consider bankruptcy. Volunteers like Lisa spend approximately one hour on the phone with these clients, asking for details about their financial situation and advising them about debt collection procedures, consumer protection laws and whether bankruptcy might benefit them.

Lisa Sumner says, “It’s very gratifying to help members of the community on such a personal level. You’d be surprised how many people still believe that they can be put in jail for failing to pay a credit card bill!”
