RALEIGH, N.C. – The North Carolina Economic Developers Association (NCEDA) has elected its 2014-2015 Board of Directors.

The 2014-2015 officers are:

  • President – C. Michael Smith, Executive Director, Statesville Regional Development
  • Vice-President – Ernest C. Pearson, Member, Nexsen Pruet, LLC
  • Secretary/Treasurer – Andrew Tate, President & CEO, Henderson County Partnership for Economic Development
  • Immediate Past President – Mark B. Clasby, Executive Director, Haywood Economic Development Council

Prior to being recruited as Executive Director of Statesville Regional Development in 2006, NCEDA’s incoming President Michael Smith worked in Raleigh for seven years at the North Carolina Department of Commerce.

Since moving to the Statesville-Troutman area, the community has continued to build on the previous record of success and landed several significant projects. These include the 2013 $130,000,000 Brazilian nonwovens manufacturing operation, Providencia USA, and over 300 jobs at Doosan Infracore’s construction equipment manufacturing and headquarters facility. Site Selection named SRD one of the Top Economic Development Groups in both 2011 and 2008.

Smith’s private sector experience includes over seven years in the executive recruitment industry, working in both the medical and information technology industries. During that period he spent two years in Atlanta and two years in Dallas, before returning home to North Carolina.

Smith has served on the city visioning committee and the steering committee for the community branding initiative. He is currently an ex-officio board member of the Greater Statesville Chamber of Commerce and for Downtown Statesville Development Corp.

He is a 2005 Economic Development Institute graduate from the University of Oklahoma, and was a 2003 recipient of the Gov. James Holshouser professional development scholarship from NCEDA.  Smith holds an MA in Geography and a BA in Political Science, both from              East Carolina University.

NCEDA also elected three new board members, who will serve until 2017:

  • Brenda Daniels, Economic Development Manager, ElectriCities of N.C., Inc.
  • Rick Kiernan, Principal, Convergent Nonprofit Solutions
  • Gary Lanier, Director, Columbus County Economic Development Commission

“We are very excited to welcome this latest Board of Directors to lead NCEDA into 2015,” said Mark Clasby, NCEDA immediate past president. “This is a group of leaders bringing keen insights and actionable ideas from their communities throughout the state. I look forward to watching them continue to guide NCEDA’s championing of economic growth across North Carolina.”

The new officers and board members officially assumed their positions July 1, 2014. Biographies and pictures are available upon request.
