Nexsen Pruet Expands Health Care Practice; Scott Hultstrand Joins Columbia Office

January 6, 2014

Nexsen Pruet announced today that Scott Hultstrand has joined the firm’s Columbia office following five years with the South Carolina Medical Association.

Hultstrand served as general counsel and vice president of external affairs for the SCMA. In addition to providing legal counsel to the SCMA and its subsidiaries, he developed hospital-physician clinical integration initiatives, led health reform implementation efforts, and assisted physicians with legal issues and practice transformation.  He is a frequent speaker on the Affordable Care Act, accountable care organizations, population health, and physician payment and care delivery reform.

“Our work within the health care industry has been a cornerstone of our law firm for more than 50 years,” said Matthew Roberts, Chair of Nexsen Pruet’s Health Care Team. “Scott is a fine attorney and we believe his broad skillset will be vital in helping our clients face growing challenges related to the implementation of Affordable Care Act.”

Prior to SCMA, Hultstrand devoted five years to public service law working for the State of South Carolina with stints as legal counsel to the Coordinating Council for Economic Development with the S.C. Department of Commerce and as an Assistant Attorney General in the securities division of Office of the Attorney General.

Hultstrand is a Council Member of the Health Law Section of the South Carolina Bar, and belongs to the American Health Lawyers Association and the American College of Healthcare Executives. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of South Carolina and his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law.
