John Sowards Re-elected as Chair of Nexsen Pruet

June 25, 2013

Nexsen Pruet members have re-elected John Sowards as the Firm’s Board Chairman. Sowards will serve a second three year term beginning July 1, 2013.

As chairman, Sowards is responsible for directing the vision and strategy for the firm - one of the nation's largest according to The NLJ 350 - comprised of almost 190 attorneys in eight offices across the Carolinas.

“Our firm experienced solid growth during my first three years, but our work is far from done.” said Sowards, “When I became chairman three years ago, we had about twenty fewer attorneys than we do now.  And, because our clients are growing, we have our eye on growing more in some specific areas in order to keep providing effective and efficient service.”

John Sowards’ legal practice is focused in the areas of real estate, corporate and finance law.  He has extensive experience with all aspects of shopping center and hotel development, as well as commercial lending including troubled debt restructuring and workouts.  Additionally, he represents businesses on matters related to finance, acquisitions, mergers, employment, contracts and business negotiations.

Prior to law school, Sowards was commissioned as a U.S. Army Second Lieutenant and served four years of active duty. He served an additional 10 years in the active Army Reserve.

Sowards and his wife of over 40 years, Elizabeth, live in Chapin SC.  He has been involved in a variety of public service and community service efforts and currently serves as a member of the PEBA Board and is Chairman of the Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission.

Nexsen Pruet, LLC is one of the largest law firms in the Carolinas, with almost 190 attorneys and offices in Columbia, Charleston, Greenville, Hilton Head, and Myrtle Beach, S.C. as well as Charlotte, Greensboro, and Raleigh, N.C.  Founded in 1945, Nexsen Pruet provides a broad range of legal services to the business community and represents companies and other entities in local, state, national, and international venues.  For further information, see
