On June 23, Columbia's WLTX reported "Department of Revenue Director Retiring." The news from Associated Press reporter Seanna Adcox began:
The director who took the helm of South Carolina's Department of Revenue following a massive hacking is retiring again.
Bill Blume's resignation takes effect July 18. Gov. Nikki Haley's office confirmed Monday she will nominate his chief of staff, Rick Reames, to replace him.
When the news broke, Nexsen Pruet's Burnie Maybank applauded the Governor's decision:
“Rick is a talented tax attorney, so it makes perfect sense for Governor Haley to select him to head the agency,” said Burnie Maybank, a member (partner) of Nexsen Pruet who twice served as Director of the DOR. “South Carolina taxpayers will benefit from his work ethic, skill set and vast knowledge of the state’s tax code.”
Reames left Nexsen Pruet in January to become Chief of Staff at the Department of Revenue. Before joining the Department, Reames served as Chairman of the South Carolina Bar Association’s Tax Section.
While in private practice he regularly advised businesses across multiple industry sectors on matters related to taxation. Reames earned his degree in Business Economics from Wofford College, his law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law and his L.L.M. degree in taxation from New York University School of Law.
