Tax Team Expands to Meet Client Wealth Planning Needs; Kathryn Duffy Joins Nexsen Pruet in Charlotte

December 8, 2014

Kathryn Duffy has joined the Charlotte office as an Associate and will practice with the firm’s Tax Group. Her primary focus will be on estate planning, asset protection, federal and state taxation and ensuring compliance and minimizing tax burdens for clients.

“It seems there’s continual change in how individuals, businesses, estates and trusts are taxed. Currently income tax rates including federal and state are approaching 50% and may actually exceed 50% depending upon the state of residence,” said Robert Lyerly, Nexsen Pruet’s Tax Group leader in Charlotte. “Katie will take the worrying out of wealth planning so our clients can focus on their work and family -- not tax rules and tax rates.”

Prior to joining Nexsen Pruet, Duffy worked with a Virginia-based firm, where she handled complex estate and asset protection plans for high-net worth clients. She oversaw and supervised the administration of trusts and prepared customized operating agreements, business succession plans, purchase agreements, leases and promissory notes for corporations, subchapter s-corporations, limited liability companies and partnerships.

Duffy’s background also includes negotiating, drafting, and enforcing prenuptial and postnuptial agreements; performing all aspects of probate estate administration; and representing clients in fiduciary litigation matters, such as drafting and filing motions, answers, and orders; attending hearings; and negotiating and drafting settlements.

In addition to her legal practice, Duffy has instructed continuing legal education courses for organizations, including the National Business Institute. Duffy earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia and her law degree, with honors, from the George Washington University Law School.
