Nexsen Pruet Receives “Outstanding Middle School Business Partner” Award; Eighth Next Steps Class Graduates

April 30, 2014

Nexsen Pruet has been awarded the “Outstanding Middle School Business Partner” award for 2013-2014 by District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties.  Chapin Middle School nominated the Firm for their part in creating and implementing the Next Steps program which positively impacts young ladies across the Midlands.

Nexsen Pruet attorney and Next Steps co-founder, Laurie Becker accepted the award on behalf of the Firm at the Annual District 5 Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast on April 23.

An excerpt of the nomination letter presented to the District by Chapin Middle School:

“… The Next Steps program, created by Laurie Becker and Marcia Benson, is a collaborative effort between Nexsen Pruet and Chapin Middle School.  The program began in September 2010 and is still going strong due to the continued efforts of these women.  To date, over 200 young ladies have participated in Next Steps.  It is a program specifically designed to empower young ladies by assisting them in developing leadership skills and self-confidence.  This team has very quickly become a valuable asset to our school, as well as the students whose lives they touch.

Professional businesswomen from across the Midlands cover topics such as  the definition of leadership, leadership among peers, social interaction and networking, financial independence, planning for the future, the importance of a mentor, and responsibility to the community.  The final session provides a real-world experience in professional networking, and these young students have the opportunity to attend a luncheon in a professional setting at Nexsen Pruet’s Columbia office and interact with local businesswomen.”

On April 29th, the 8th class of Next Steps celebrated its completion with a luncheon in Nexsen Pruet’s Columbia office. In all, 17 middle school girls received certificates upon graduating. See a few photos here.
