"New Hanover commissioners OK cell phone tower at Murrayville Elementary" Star News November 3, 2009

Wilmington's Star News reports on the approval of a cell phone tower in New Hanover County.
The vote came following a presentation to commissioners by Nexsen Pruet attorney Tom Johnson. The paper reports that the "90-foot tower, which would be built by American Tower Corp. and carry signals for AT&T service, is part of the company’s efforts to expand 3G service to the Wilmington area."
Some parents and neighbors expressed concerns about the tower because it will be built at Murrayville Elementary School. But, Johnson told commissioners that "state and federal law prohibits the commissioners from considering radio frequencies as a public safety matter" because there is "no evidence that cell phone radio frequencies cause cancer or other health problems."
