"Verdicts & Settlements Roundup: Big recoveries roll in despite sour economy but jurors tighter on simple auto-tort cases"

South Carolina Lawyers Weekly    January 25, 2010

Nexsen Pruet attorney Val Stieglitz offers insight about how the economy has affected the legal climate in an article in the January 25th edition of South Carolina Lawyers Weekly.

Steiglitz chairs the firm's Business Litigation group.  He told reporter Fred Horlbeck that the recession has decreased the amount of "large, complex, big-ticket cases."

"I think the economy has caused litigants in general to assess more carefully whether initiating litigation is the best thing for their company," Steilglitz continued. "And so I have had a perception of... a little bit of a dropoff in what you might call major litigation. And the people I talk to about it do attribute that to entities with legal claims thinking a lot harder about the costs involved in starting lawsuits."

Val Stieglitz practices in the areas of business torts, unfair competition, commercial, intellectual property, trade secrets, insurance, and products liability litigation. He has broad experience in all aspects of these types of cases, from injunctive proceedings through trial and appeal.
