"Study: Middle incomes hit hard, S.C. taxes favor wealthy, group says"

The November 19th edition of The State newspaper quotes Nexsen Pruet attorney Burnie Maybank in an article entitled "Study: Middle incomes hit hard, S.C. taxes favor wealthy, group says."

The article by reporter Gina Smith examined a new study by the "Columbia-based nonpartisan organization" S.C. Fair Share.  The group wants the report to be considered by state lawmakers and the Taxation Realignment Commission.

Maybank chairs the commission and told the paper that if "you look at it from the state's perspective, you don't want to rely too much on any one source. We are fairly diversified."

South Carolina has "income tax brackets, but we are flat because the top bracket (of 7 percent) hits at a low level. You really can't call South Carolina very progressive when the top bracket kicks in for nearly everyone," said Maybank.  Click here to read more from The State.

Burnie Maybank represents both public and private entities.  His practice focuses on economic development incentives, public finance, state and local tax controversy, exempt organizations and charitable giving, alcohol beverage control and regulatory work before the Public Service Commission.
