Burnie Maybank Returns To Nexsen Pruet After Serving As Director of SC Revenue

COLUMBIA, SC - Burnet R. (Burnie) Maybank III will return to private practice at Nexsen Pruet, LLC after serving as director of the S.C. Department of Revenue under Governor Mark Sanford. Maybank also served on the Coordinating Council for Economic Development and chaired the Enterprise Zone Sub Committee.

Maybank will be a Member (partner) in the firm's Columbia office, working with the Banking and Finance Group and focusing his practice on economic development, state and local tax controversy matters and alcohol beverage control issues.

Maybank was appointed by Governor Sanford in January 2003. He also served as the first-ever director of the Department of Revenue and Taxation from 1995-1999 under then-Governor David Beasley. In the years between, he practiced with Nexsen Pruet in Columbia.

Maybank recently made national news regarding the Department of Revenue's investigation of conservation easements as well as disciplinary matters instituted by the Department against tax professionals pursuant to the sale of tax shelters. Maybank also made South Carolina headlines for what became known as "Maybank Money," where he collected $104 million in extra enforced collection state revenues during his tenure.

Maybank has held a number of government positions in a public service career that spans nearly two decades. He served as legal counsel to Gov. Carroll Campbell; as a commissioner on the S.C. Public Service Commission; as a member of the board of the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control; and as deputy securities commissioner and general counsel in the S.C. Secretary of State’s Office. He also served as the lead co-author of many economic development incentive bills passed by the General Assembly.

He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina, his law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law, and an LLM in taxation from Emory University. He has twice been awarded the Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina’s highest civilian honor, from Governor Campbell and Governor Beasley.
