Bar Foundation Honors Wilburn Brewer With Fund Dedicated to Legal Professionalism May 21, 2006
Charleston, SC - The South Carolina Bar Foundation on Friday unveiled The Wilburn Brewer Jr. Memorial Professional Fund in memory of the Nexsen Pruet partner who passed away in 2003.
The fund is designed to recognize Brewer, a former president of the Bar, and his passion for skill, competence, and character in the practice of law. It will be used each year by the Chief Justice's Commission on the Profession – of which Brewer was an inaugural member – to sponsor an event related to legal professionalism.
"This is a wonderful way to remember Wilburn," said Leighton Lord, chairman of the board of Nexsen Pruet. "He loved and respected the law deeply and was committed to the Bar. I can't think of a more appropriate way to honor his memory."
The fund will be supported by Nexsen Pruet, the Attorneys Liability Protection Society, and Brewer's friends and colleagues. Anyone interested in contributing can contact Heather Matthews at hmatthews@nexsenpruet.com. All donations are tax deductible.
Brewer joined Nexsen Pruet more than 40 years ago and was chair of the firm's litigation section at the time of his death. In 2003, the University of South Carolina honored him with its prestigious Compleat Lawyer Platinum Award, given in recognition of the "competence, ethics, and integrity" he displayed throughout his career.
He was also cited as a "leading individual" in litigation by the legal publishers Chambers & Partners, which wrote that he was one of the "best litigators in the state - strong across-the-board and analytically sound." Additionally, Brewer has been included in two categories of The Best Lawyers in America.
As president of the State Bar, he helped develop a Declaration of Promises to Clients that established high standards for ethical and responsible behavior by attorneys.
Nexsen Pruet, LLC is one of the largest law firms in the Carolinas, with more than 170 attorneys and offices in Columbia, Charleston, Greenville, Hilton Head, and Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Charlotte and Greensboro, N.C.
