"Tax reform done right" The Sun News January 16, 2010

The January 16th edition of Myrtle Beach's The Sun News features an article entitled "Tax reform done right." It looks at the state's Tax Realignment Commission, which is chaired by Nexsen Pruet attorney Burnie Maybank.
The editorial begins "Burnet Maybank, former director of the S.C. Department of Revenue, likens the state's tax code to a giant waterbed. Whenever lawmakers push down on one corner, he says, the pressure just causes taxes to rise somewhere else.
Lawmakers have done so much pushing in recent years that the bed has gotten tough to lie on, so last year they took the mostly commendable step of creating a Tax Realignment Commission, an independent committee (headed by Maybank) tasked with studying nearly the entire tax code and presenting comprehensive recommendations back to the legislature."
Burnie Maybank is a member of Nexsen Pruet's economic development and banking & finance practice groups. He was Director of the South Carolina Department of Revenue from 1995 to 1999 and 2003 to 2005. |
