Nexsen Pruet attorneys have once again played a key role in a major economic development deal in South Carolina.

On the heels of negotiating incentive packages for Boeing’s Dreamliner commercial aircraft assembly plant and a new distribution center in Berkeley County for the Rockefeller Group/MeadWestvaco venture, attorneys Neil Robinson, Ric Tapp and Stephanie Eames worked closely with “the same group of lawmakers” to put together Clemson’s recently approved grant application.

On Monday, the U.S. Energy Department announced that Clemson University's Restoration Institute had won the $45 million dollar grant.  The grant, along with $53 million of matching funds, will bring an off-shore wind turbine testing facility to the former Charleston Naval Base in North Charleston.

“From top to bottom, we are seeing unprecedented cooperation from lawmakers, agency heads and business leaders when it comes to economic development in our state,“ said Ric Tapp.  “This would not have been possible without the leadership of Senators Glenn McConnell, Hugh Leatherman, Larry Grooms, and Paul Campbell.

“When we started looking at how to cobble together more than $50 million dollars for a grant application, the task seemed daunting,” said Neil Robinson. “But, thanks to cooperation between the legislature and agencies like the Charleston Naval Complex Redevelopment Authority, the Commerce Department, the Ports Authority and the Railways Commission, we put forth a solid application and South Carolina will reap the rewards for years to come.”

The federal government says that South Carolina could gain between 10,000 and 20,000 wind power jobs over the next 20 years.  Click here to read Clemson University’s news release which details more about the project’s potential impact on South Carolina’s economy.
