Danish Ship in Charleston Further Strengths South Carolina-Denmark Ties, Says Nexsen Pruet's Waring

August 10, 2009

The Charleston docking of Denmark’s “nautical ambassador” – the Danmark, a 76-year-old training ship – reflects a further strengthening of that country’s ties with South Carolina, said Nexsen Pruet attorney Brad Waring, the Danish Honorary Counsel for the Carolinas.

“We have had a significant economic relationship with Denmark in recent years, and I think the fact that this historic vessel is making one of its two U.S. stops in Charleston reinforces that relationship,” added Waring, a Member (Partner) in the firm’s Charleston office.

The Danmark will be in Charleston August 11-14th as part of the full-rigged vessel’s 95th voyage.

Waring, who concentrates his practice in the areas of business and consumer litigation, was appointed Honorary Danish Consul for the Carolina’s by Her Majesty Margrethe II, Queen of Denmark in November of 2007.  As consul, his responsibilities include helping promote trade and business with Denmark, with a focus on the Carolinas.

While trade between the Palmetto State and Demark was $25 million in 2007, Waring said he believes that could grow as the global economy begins to bounce back. Having the Danmark in Charleston, he continued, can contribute to that expansion.

“There’s no doubt that the greater our exchange with Denmark – culturally, socially, or economically – the greater the potential for leveraging activity with Danish companies,” Waring said. “The Danmark provides the opportunity for us to know an important trade partner even better.”

Built in 1933, the steel-hulled, three-masted ship has served as training vessel for young people seeking careers at sea. Capable of sailing around the world, it is the property of the Kingdom of Denmark and is operated by the Maritime Training and Education Centre in Frederikshavn, Denmark.
