John Hardaway Speaks to International Groups of Intellectual Property Attorneys

John B. Hardaway, III, a member in Nexsen Pruet’s Greenville office, led presentations to attorneys from around the world at two Federation Internationale Des Conseils En Propriete Industrielle symposiums.

Hardaway spoke at an FICPI symposium in Florence, Italy on October 9th and at another in Yokohama, Japan on December 5^th.  In Italy, Hardaway’s topic was Well Known Trademarks.  In Japan, he discussed Sound, Scent and Motion Trademarks.   The presentations dealt with trademark issues in the United States, particularly jurisdictional secondary meaning, and, registration of unusual trademarks.

Hardaway is the President-Elect of the U.S. Section of FICPI.   The federation works in the interests of patent and trademark professionals worldwide. With members in 86 countries, it is an international organization broadly representative of intellectual property practitioners and owners of intellectual property.

Hardaway concentrates his practice in IP and international law. He has served as president of the Patent, Trademark and Copyright Law Association of the Carolinas; chaired the Japanese Patent Office Liaison Council of the U.S. Bar; and chaired the American Intellectual Property Law Association’s IP Practice in Japan Committee.

He earned his undergraduate degree from Clemson, a Master of Science degree in ceramic engineering from Iowa State University.  While working as an Examiner in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, he attended law school at Catholic University and obtained his J.D. degree from the University of Tennessee.
