Julian Nexsen Receives Prestigious DuRant Award from the S.C. Bar Foundation

Columbia, SCJulian J. Nexsen, a longtime partner at Nexsen Pruet who has guided its emergence as one of the largest firms in the Carolinas, has been named the 28th recipient of the DuRant Distinguished Public Service Award from the South Carolina Bar Foundation.

The DuRant award is given in recognition of meritorious service to the law and to the community. It is considered one of the most prestigious honors in the profession, and recipients are nominated and selected by their professional peers statewide.

Nexsen received the award on Jan. 26, 2007, at the Bar’s annual convention in Charleston.

“We are delighted to congratulate Mr. Nexsen,” said Leighton Lord, board chairman of Nexsen Pruet.  “He is a person who always wants to help the Bar and the community, yet he never wants any recognition for his effort.”

Nexsen was the first honor graduate of his class at the University of South Carolina School of Law and has been recognized repeatedly throughout his career. He earned the law school’s Compleat Lawyer Platinum Award for outstanding professional and civic achievement, and is also listed in Best Lawyers in America.

Recently, the Bar Foundation passed a resolution recognizing him for a lifetime pledge of support on behalf of its efforts to promote justice and enhance the legal profession.

Nexsen is a past president of the Richland County Bar Association and the state Bar Foundation. Additionally, he served as a member of the Board of Governors of the S.C. Bar, the Legislative Committee for the Revision of the Corporation Code, and the Bar’s House of Delegates.

He is also a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and the American Bar Foundation; a member of the American Law Institute, the South Carolina Law Institute, and the USC Law School Partnership Board; and a permanent member of the Judicial Conference of the Fourth Judicial Circuit.

Over the years, Nexsen has contributed significantly to the community as well.

He is a former chairman of the Board of Trustees of Providence Hospital, a former trustee of the Providence Foundation, and a former trustee of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine Health System. Currently, he serves on the Board of Trustees of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine Ministries Development Corporation.

In addition, Nexsen has served as chairman of the Board of Deacons and an elder of Eastminster Presbyterian Church, and as a trustee of Congaree Presbytery. He presently is a member of the Trinity Presbytery Council.
