Sam Whitt

Samuel W. Whitt concentrates his practice in the areas of corporate law, venture capital, economic development, finance, nonprofit law, and estate planning.

Before joining Nexsen Pruet, he was Of Counsel at Sanford Holshouser LLP, where he represented corporate clients ranging from start-up ventures to Fortune 500 companies. His background includes mergers, acquisitions, and a variety of transactional matters.

Mr. Whitt has also held positions as general counsel, chief operating officer, and president of several venture-backed companies. With this hands-on experience, he has represented start-up companies in the Research Triangle Park and has counseled clients on legal, financing, business development, and corporate strategies.

Mr. Whitt has extensive economic development and nonprofit experience.  He has formed and counseled numerous 501(c)(3) organizations focused on economic development, previously serving as general counsel to a nonprofit organization affiliated with the North Carolina Department of Commerce and engaged in economic development across the state.  He also served as Executive Director to the Cherokee Gives Back Foundation, a private operating foundation focused on Brownfield remediation and economic development activities throughout the world. 

Mr. Whitt’s estate planning practice has focused on trusts, foundations, and other planning techniques.

He is a member of the North Carolina Bar Association, Wake County Bar Association, N.C. Economic Developers Association, and American Corporate Counsel Association. He is also active in a local troop of the Boy Scouts of America.
