Paul G. Topolka is Special Counsel and works in the tax practice group.
He has extensive tax controversy experience, and has litigated numerous cases before the United States Tax Court. He also specializes in IRS procedural and dispute resolution.
Previously, Paul worked as a senior manager in KPMG’s Tax Controversy Services practice. Prior to that, he was the District Counsel for the North-South Carolina District of the Internal Revenue Service. While with the IRS, he served as Chief Legal Advisor for the District Director and the Chiefs of Appeals, Criminal Investigation, Collection, and Examination divisions.
Paul has lectured on a wide variety of subjects before the Tax Section of the North Carolina Bar Association, the North Carolina Association of CPAs and other professional groups. He has also been part of the instructor cadre for Chief Counsel’s Trial Attorney Program and Brief Writing Program.
Paul earned his undergraduate degree from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo and his law degree from Valparaiso University School of Law in Indiana. He is a member of the Tax Section of the North Carolina Bar Association and also serves on the association's Tax Council.
