Edward Bender practices in the health care area.  He regularly advises hospitals and physicians both in an outside general counsel capacity and on specific matters.  Mr. Bender’s practice focuses on assisting clients with their strategic development and the implementation of their goals within the regulatory framework applicable to health care entities and practitioners. 

Additionally, Mr. Bender advises individuals and organizations on investigations and disciplinary matters before various South Carolina professional licensing boards, including but not limited to, the South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners, the South Carolina Board of Nursing, the South Carolina Board of Pharmacy and the South Carolina Board of Long Term Health Care Administrators.  

He also provides guidance to public entities on issues relating to the South Carolina Freedom of Information Act.

The scope of Mr. Bender’s advice regularly includes:

  • Stark/Anti-Kickback analysis
  • fraud and abuse matters
  • hospital/physician relationships
  • contract drafting and negotiation
  • health care mergers/acquisitions/affiliations
  • professional licensing investigations
  • compliance with the SC Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)

Within Nexsen Pruet, Mr. Bender has served as Chairman of the Associate Advisory Group and currently serves as a member of the firm’s Recruiting and Retention Committee.

Mr. Bender actively serves as a member of the board of directors of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Columbia. 

He earned his undergraduate degree in Political Science from the University of South Carolina and his law degree from the USC School of Law.  As an undergraduate, he received the prestigious Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award, the highest honor awarded to a USC student.

Mr. Bender’s background includes work as a legislative liaison with S.C. Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism. While at PRT, he assisted in developing and implementing legislative strategy and acted as the agency's primary contact with the South Carolina General Assembly.  He also served as an Urban Fellow with the New York City Department of Transportation, where he worked on the city’s traffic policies and as a speech writer for the Agency's Director.
